About Us
About us
It all started with birds in 1974.
Bob Novak Sr, CEO (Top Dog)
Pets Warehouse enjoys a loyal clientele and has become one of the industry's top pet retailers. Our web site has been ranked #2 by Yahoo Internet Life magazine, and is the third most visited pet supply site by NPD Research. Our success has been built on a simple principle: take care of every customer and make them number one.
The business grew from a chance meeting with a bird, when founder Bob Novak Sr., a computer programmer, was introduced to a co-worker’s tame and talking parrot, then Bob & his wife Cathy found Herby an amazon parrot, it was love at first sight, and soon Bob’s enchantment led to owning several pet birds of his own including "Little Grey" who they shared their lives with for over 30 years. The passion led to opening a bird specialty store in Bayshore LI, NY in 1974, the genesis of the Pets Warehouse superstores that serves all types of pets today. Along the way Bob operated two USDA-licensed bird quarantine import facilities, providing birds to dealers throughout the United States, and today his Pet Warehouse franchise chain includes Six retail stores and an online catalog with products and services for birds, dogs, cats, fish, reptiles and other pets.
From the beginning, our top priority was to provide unmatched customer care and to help our customers understand how we can help them. We stock our website with the latest products, in fact over 40,000 of the best deals and plenty of information to help you decide for yourself. We are proud of every member of our staff, because they make the difference. So, when pet owners call us or log onto our website, they're doing business with a company that shares their enthusiasm about pets, and can match our customers with the items that they need.
Over the years one thing was always evident... the customers love seeing the live animals...but there are limits on what should be sold from a pet store. Fish, reptiles and birds are comfortable being displayed, but there are serious ethical issues that concern the sale of puppies and cats in stores. The animal’s welfare is our first concern, so you will never see dogs and cats sold in our stores.
The aquariums, terrariums and bird displays draw visitors’ attention—like live theatre. “Let’s picture a single mom with a young child who come into the store for dog food. That child will always persuade the mother to let them look at all the fish tanks and other pets, making the visit more enjoyable and memorable.”
Bob says. “This results in longer visits and greater impulse sales. The pair may find a cute dog sweater or a cat toy that they would have missed.
A store without pets is not a REAL pet store, and you know they’ll come back to see the pretty fish again.”
